Williamsburg, KY – In a game that saw nine ties and four lead changes, it was tenth-ranked Georgetown that hit two free-throw with 32 seconds remaining to defeat 21
st-ranked UC men's basketball team 70-68 in conference play Thursday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. With the win the Tigers improve to 21-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 18-6 overall and 5-4 against the MSC.
Georgetown got off to a fast start taking a 10-2 lead four minutes into the first half. The Patriots responded as
Malik Colvin-Seldon hit a bucket, followed by an
Anthony Eaves three pointer to cut the deficit to six at 13-7 with 13:33 remaining. The two teams traded baskets until the 7:39 mark when
Eric Duncan and
Will Gary drained back-to-back three's to cut the deficit to 24-21. Just under two minutes later,
Bernard Samuel connected with Gary from behind-the-arc to even the game at 24-24. Georgetown would retake the lead, but never pulled more than three points ahead, over the next sever minutes until Eaves' triple at the 1:58 mark knotted the game at 31-31. Eaves hit a pair of free throws followed by a
Kaashif English field goal gave Cumberlands its first lead of the game 35-33 with 28 seconds remaining. Shadell Millinghaus hit a field goal before the buzzer to tie the game at 35-35 heading into the break.
The two teams were tied twice, before the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take a 49-39 lead with 13:32 remaining in the second half. Eaves ended the Patriots dry-spell with a field goal, which was followed by Eaves finding
Travon Labranche for three to make it a seven point game. The two teams traded buckets over the next three minutes giving Georgetown a 59-49 lead with 9:06 remaining. The Patriots chipped away at the lead as Colvin-Seldon six of UC's next ten points to make it a three-point game 62-59 with 6:25 remaining. The Tigers added a pair of free throws, before Gary hit a three-pointer and Colvin-Seldon converted a field goal to even the score at 64-64. On UC's next possession Eaves hit his third triple to put Cumberlands up one with 4:14 left. From that point, it came down to the foul line as Georgetown outshot UC 4-1 from the charity stripe to take a 70-68 lead with 32 second remaining. Cumberlands had an opportunity in the final seconds but couldn't convert for the 70-68 final.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Colvin-Seldon, who tallied a team-high 16 points, four blocks, and three steals.
Chance Morton grabbed 15 rebounds, including six offensive rebounds. It marks the sixth time this season he has recorded at least ten rebounds in a game. Gary finished with 15 points, while Eaves chipped in 13.
Taylor Gover dished out a game-high four assists, one block, and a steal.
The Patriots return to the court Saturday, February 10, when they travel to Campbellsville, KY to take on the Tigers. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and live video is available
