Bat Pats Sweep Eagles in Home Opening Doubleheader

Williamsburg, KY – UC Baseball opened its home schedule up a bit earlier than initially expected due to the cancellation of their games at the Perfect Game Spring Swing due to rain. The Patriots would pick up a pair of games on Friday as they hosted Alice Lloyd College at Doyle Buhl Stadium. The Pat bats were hot and heavy during both games as UC would sweep the doubleheader, winning game one by a 12-1 margin while taking game two by a score of 7-1. The pair of victories bumps the Patriots to 2-1 on the year.

Game one would see UC score in every inning they would come to the plate. In the first, Roberto Prado would lead off the inning with a single. After J.C. Santos reached via error and put runners in scoring position, Raudy Martinez would hit a sac fly to center, bringing in Prado to take a 1-0 lead. Santos would come around to score later in the inning on a single by Andrew Ramos, giving the Pats a 2-0 advantage going to the second. After being hit by a pitch, Orley Arellano would move to second on a sac bunt by Reed Spata. Prado would then come back to the plate a drive in a run on a RBI double, pushing the lead to 3-0.

The Eagles would get a run in the third, but it would be their only one of the game as they cut into the lead 3-1. UC would hang five runs in the bottom of the inning, all unearned, which included a three run double by Arellano, a RBI single by Spata, and a RBI single by Prado to make it 8-1 Patriots. In the fourth, the long ball showed up as Martinez would send one quickly over the fence in left for his first home run of the season, making it 9-1 Cumberlands after four.

Arellano would again be hit by a pitch in the fifth and would come around to score later in the inning on a RBI single by Daniel Diaz to make it 10-1 UC. In the sixth, two more runs would score as Spata would drive one in on a single while Arellano would score on an error to give UC the 12-1 win.

Frankie Lopez would get the win for UC in his first career start at UC, going five innings allowing just one earned run on four hits while sitting nine down on strikes. Colton Easterwood would finish out the game throwing the final two innings of scoreless ball giving up no hits and one walk fanning two in the process.

Game two was much of the same, but UC bulked their scoring up into the early part of the game. After a scoreless inning by Zach Hurley in the first, UC's offense went to work. Prado would double to lead off the inning, but Diaz and Martinez would be retired to put two away. There, an error would allow the inning to continue and it did in a major way. Eleven Patriots would bat in the inning as six unearned runs would cross the plate for UC. Four singles by Santos, Robbie Stroub, Spata, and Prado would follow along with another hit by pitch on Arellano would couple together to give Cumberlands a 6-0 lead. The final run of the game for UC was scored in the second where three straight singles by Santos, Arellano, and Alex Dominguez would drive in a run, making it 7-0 Patriots. Alice Lloyd would plate a run in the fourth, but it was not near enough to overtake UC.

Hurley would look strong in his first win of the year, finishing the day after four innings of work allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight. Josh Avila, Garrett Vathroder, and Nicholas Purpera would all pitch hitless innings to close out the victory.

UC will now turn their attention to Tuesday, February 13th as they are scheduled to travel to nearby Barbourville, Kentucky to take on the Bulldogs of Union College in a non-conference rivalry game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
