Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Patriots Fall in Battle of Top Ten Teams

Williamsburg, KY – Facing their third ranked opponent in six days, the seventh-ranked UC men's lacrosse team struggled offensively as they fell to sixth-ranked Siena Heights 10-7 Saturday night at James H. Taylor, II Stadium.  With the win the Saints improve to 4-0, while the Patriots fall to 4-3.

Siena Heights struck first as Shane Lewandowski scored an unassisted goal just over four minutes into the game to give the Saints the early 1-0 lead.  Coming out of a timeout, the Patriots found the equalizer as Henry Quaye found Whitten McCune for a goal with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter. Three minutes later, Walker Lacy forced a turnover and set up a Cumberlands transition goal as Sam Collinson connected with Justin Darley to give UC a 2-1 advantage.  Kody Swann won the ensuing faceoff and on the Patriots possession Caleb Elerick found Darley in front of the cage for a goal to make it 3-1 with 1:04 remaining.  Siena Height cut into the lead as Lewandowski netted a goal in the final seconds of the quarter to make it 3-2.

The Saints evened the score at 3-3 three minutes into the second quarter as Ryan Mamo recorded his lone goal of the game.  The game remained tied until the 4:29 mark when Jake Morgan scooped a ground ball and started a transition as Elerick found Collinson in front of the cage for a goal.  Danny Orr tallied back-to-back goals for the Saints to give Siena Heights a 5-4 lead at half.

Siena Heights extend their lead to 6-4 before Elerick found Collinson for the second time on the night to cut the deficit to 6-5 with 4:16 left in the third period.  A minute later, Elerick put a well-placed shot just inside the crossbar to even the game at 6-6.  The Saints responded with back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of the period to take an 8-6 lead.

The Saints added two more goals to start the fourth quarter and extend their lead to 10-6 with 7:24 left.  Dalton Smith netted an unassisted goal at the 4:30 mark to cut it to 10- 7 but that the closest the Patriots would get.

Swann led the way for the Patriots going 16-21 on faceoffs with eight ground balls.  Nick DiFranco scooped a game-high ten ground balls to go along with four caused turnovers.  Darley and Collinson finishes with two goals apiece, while Elerick tallied four points.

The Patriots will return to the field Wednesday, March 14, when they travel to Marshall, MO to take on third-ranked Missouri Valley.  The game is slated for 7 p.m.
