Patriots Use Long Ball to Take Down V-Hawks; Streak Now at 15

Williamsburg, KY – A pair of big home runs in each of today's games would help propel the Patriots to a pair of wins over the V-Hawks of Viterbo University. The Patriots would win game one by a score of 11-3 while taking game two 13-3, marking the 15th straight win for UC as well as the seventh straight contest Cumberlands has scored 10 or more runs. The winning streak is the second longest in the Brad Shelton era (16 games – 2004) The victories improve the Patriots to 19-3 overall on the season.

Game one the ball was handed to Anthony Martinez, who gave UC a brilliant complete game performance, its only complete game of the weekend. Martinez would come away with the win, going 7.0 innings allowing three-runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four in the win.

The Patriots would get things started early in the bottom of the first. After two runs scored for UC, Bryan Benz would continue his hot offensive output from the previous night. After hitting a grand slam in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, he would smash a 1-1 pitch deep to center field, over the fence for his fifth long ball of the year, giving the Patriots a 5-0 lead.

Viterbo would score three of their own in the fourth, but the Patriots would answer. In the bottom of the fourth, it was Benz for a second time, this one a solo shot to left, his sixth of the season, to make it 6-3 Patriots. In the fifth, Benz would just miss a third home run as he smacked a ball deep off the fence, driving in two more for his fifth and sixth RBIs of the contest, pushing UC's lead to 8-3. Another run would score on a fielder's choice to make it 9-3 Patriots.

A RBI triple by Raudy Martinez along with a RBI groundout by Alex Dominguez would finish off UC's scoring as they would walk away with an 11-3 win.

Game two saw UC's offense explode late to seal the deal. Hampton Clark would earn the start and the win for the Patriots after throwing 4.0 innings allowing one earned run on seven hits and five walks while sitting five down on strikes. The trio of Gus Garrison, Garrett Vathroder, and Mason Kleist would combine for the final three innings pitched giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks fanning three via strikes.

The Patriots would strike first in the bottom of the first as an RBI single by Orley Arellano and a RBI double by Daniel Diaz would give UC an early 2-0 lead. Cumberlands would add two more in the second on a RBI single by Raudy Martinez as well as Arellano stealing home as part of a delayed double steal, making it 4-0 Pats.

The V-Hawks would plate a run both the third and fifth innings to cut the lead in half at 4-2, but in the bottom of the fifth, Roberto Prado would hit a RBI single up the middle, scoring Reed Spata to make it 5-2 Cumberlands. In the sixth, the Patriots would see their lead grow drastically due to the long ball. With two on and one down, Benz would continue his monster day with another three-run shot to left, his third of the day and seventh of the season, giving UC an 8-2 lead. Reed Spata would come through with a RBI single later in the inning to make it 9-2, but it was Raudy Martinez putting the icing on the cake with a grand slam, his sixth home run on the year, giving UC a 13-2 advantage.

Viterbo would add one last run in the top of the seventh, but it was all they could muster as the Patriots would come away with the 13-3 win over the V-Hawks.

UC will look to tie the longest win streak on Monday, March 12th as UC will close out its three-game series with the V-Hawks of Viterbo University with a single, nine-inning game. First pitch currently set for 3 pm, but stay tuned to UC's social media for all the up-to-date game information.
