Game Recap: Softball |

Pennycuff Goes the Distance; Santos Homers as Patriots Split with 11th-Ranked Lindsey Wilson

Williamsburg, KY – Sidney Pennycuff pitched her third straight complete game, while Morgan Santos hit a two-run homer to help the UC softball team tally a split with 11th-ranked Lindsey Wilson 3-2 and 1-5 Saturday afternoon at the UC Softball Complex.  After the games, the Patriots move to 9-17 overall and 4-4 in MSC play, while the Blue Raiders move to 23-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Pennycuff began the day getting two pop outs and a ground out in the top of the first inning.  Kailin Yantz led off the game for UC with a four-pitch walk.  Santos followed and drilled a slam over the left field fence to give the Patriots an early 2-0 lead.

UC looked to extend their lead in the second as Emily Fox and Lexi Jones both drew walks to start the inning.  Madison Huber hit a one-out RBI single to left, scoring Fox from second and giving the Patriots a 3-0 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson got on the board in the third as Calllum Pilgrim drew a two-out walk, stole second, and scored on an Alaeni Ray single to cut the lead to 3-1.  Pennycuff struck out Kalli Harris to get out of the inning as the score remained 3-1.

Pennycuff continued her strong performance as she held the Blue Raiders scoreless over the next three innings and didn't allow a baserunner to reach second as the score remained 3-1.

In the seventh, Amber Hancock doubled to lead off for Lindsey Wilson and advanced to third on a Lyric Houston one-out single. After a stolen base, Pennycuff got Kelsie Cornelius and Cassie Kooker to ground out to short for the 3-2 final.

Pennycuff pitched seven innings scattering four hits, two runs, and three strikeouts.  Santos went 1-3 with two RBI, while Huber finished 2-3 with an RBI.

In game two, Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning.  The score remained that way until the fifth when the Blue Raiders plated a pair of runs to extend their lead to 5-0.

Cumberlands looked to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Emily Fox reached on an error.  MiKayla Vires followed with a double to left, to give UC runners in score position with one-out.  Madison Huber reached base on a dropped third strike to load the bases for Yantz, who hit an RBI infield single to cut the deficit to 5-1.  That was the closest the Patriots got as Lauren Lett got the final seven outs of the game for the 5-1 final.

The Patriots will return to the field Wednesday, April 4, when they host Hiwassee for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 4 p.m.  Live video will be available here, while live stats are available here.
