Williamsburg, KY – Sidney Pennycuff recorded her first career shutout, while
Morgan Santos notched four RBI to help the UC softball team earn a split with Milligan Tuesday afternoon at the UC Softball Complex. Milligan won the first game 2-0, but the Patriots rallied to win game two 8-0 in six innings. After the games, the Patriots improve to 3-9 on the season, while the Buffaloes move to 3-7.
Sydney Maynard took the circle in game one and held the Buffaloes hitless in the first two innings. The game would remain scoreless until the top of the third as Milligan put the first two batters on base. After getting an out on a fielder's choice, Jenna Gilbert hit a two-run single through the hole to give Milligan a 2-0 lead. With runners in scoring position and one-out Maynard got Kaylee Frascatore to fly out to Amber Hillier in left field, who then fired it home for the double play as Kirstan Beaver was tagged out at the plate.
The Patriots put the leadoff batter on in both the fifth and sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth UC loaded the bases with two outs however the Buffaloes forced a ground out to keep their 2-0 advantage.
Maynard pitched her third straight complete game allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Cumberlands came out strong in game two as Pennycuff struck out two in the top of the first to retire the side in order.
Elisa Mauldin leadoff the bottom of the first inning with a single to left and scored on a
Morgan Santos triple to give UC a 1-0 edge.
Kailin Yantz followed with an RBI single, before Comer doubled to deep left. With one out,
MiKayla Vires notched a sacrifice fly to center which scored Yantz and gave the Patriots a 3-0 lead.
Pennycuff remained strong in the circle retiring five straight batters. Kassi Butcher hit a two-out double in the top of third but Pennycuff got Erica Roller to strike out swinging to get out of the inning. Pennycuff fanned two more Buffaloes in the top of the fourth to keep Milligan scoreless.
Cumberlands extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth as
Hayley Kilburn doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. Back-to-back hit by pitches loaded the bases for Mauldin who drew a two-out RBI walk. Santos followed with a bases clearing double to give the Patriots a 7-0 advantage.
Pennycuff struck out the side in the fifth and added another strikeout in the top of the sixth to not allow a Milligan baserunner get past second base. Hiller led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, advance to third on a fly out, and scored the final run on a
Coari Robertson single to right.
Pennycuff recorded her first career complete game shutout, allowing two hits and tying her career-high with 11 strikeouts. Santos went 2-3 with four RBI, while Mauldin went 1-2 with two run scored and a RBI.
The Patriots will return to the field Thursday, March 8, when they host Saint Ambrose at the UC Softball Complex. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 2 p.m. with live stats are available
