Williamsburg, KY – The UC men's tennis team notched their first win over a top-ten ranked opponent as they defeated ninth-ranked Campbellsville 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court. With the win the Patriots improve to 7-9 overall and 4-1 in MSC play, while the Tigers move to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Campbellsville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an 8-2 win at #2 doubles. The Patriots responded at #2 doubles as Aatu Mereheimo teamed with
Luis Montull for a 9-8 victory. At #3 doubles,
Rodrigo Ratte partnered with
Eric Banoub to knock off Martin Munoz and Alex Spalding 9-8 to give Cumberlands a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
In singles play,
Martin Barbier notched a 6-2, 6-1 win at #1 singles to extend UC's lead to 3-1. The Tigers posted straight set wins at #2 and #3 singles to even the score at 3-3.
Luis Montull put the Patriots back in front with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Pablo Alonso Munoz at #4 singles. Campbellsville scored at #6 singles, before Ratte posted a (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) win at #5 singles to clinch the match for UC.
The Patriots will return to the court Friday, April 13, when they travel to Lebanon, TN to take on seventh-ranked Cumberland. Match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
