Lebanon, TN – The UC women's tennis team rallied in singles play to notch their second straight conference win over a ranked opponent, this knocking off 20
th-ranked Cumberland 5-4 Friday afternoon. With the win the Patriots wrap up their regular season with an 8-9 overall record and a 4-2 mark in MSC play, while the Phoenix move to 11-9 and 3-3 against the MSC.
The Patriots struck first as
Denee Lyttle teamed with
Luka Lyttle for an 8-1 win over Joana Bou and Stefanie Navaratnam at #3 doubles to give UC an early 1-0 lead. Cumberland responded with back-to-back points at #1 and #2 doubles to give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Cumberlands came out strong in singles play as
Marian Bogajo notched a 6-0, 6-2 win at #5 singles to even the score. Cumberland recorded wins at #1 singles and #6 singles to retake a 4-2 lead. The Patriots continued to fight as
Tomomi Nagao defeated Marianela Landi 6-4, 6-1 at #2 singles to cut the deficit to 4-3.
At #3 singles,
Denee Lyttle upends Balen Salazar Yanez 6-2, 6-4 to tie the match at 4-4. In the decisive match,
Luka Lyttle defeated Ana Maria Collazos 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Patriots.
The Patriots will return to the court Friday, April 20, when they travel to Bowling Green, KY for the quarterfinals of the MSC Tournament at Kereiakes Park. Stay tuned to
