Patriots Extend Win Streak Behind Balance Scoring

Barbourville, KY – The sixth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team had nine different players net at least goal as the Patriots knocked off Union 14-2 in their regular season finale Friday night at Williamson Stadium. With the win the Patriots improve to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in AAC play, while the Bulldogs move to 0-13 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Patriots struck early as Preston Brooks netted an unassisted goal just over two minutes into the game.  Dylan Crouch and Whitten McCune added back-to-back goals to extend Cumberlands lead to 3-0 with 3:54 remaining.  Two minutes later, Jake Mitchell scooped a ground ball and found Dylan Crouch who connected with Caleb Elerick for a transition goal to give UC a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.

Kody Swann won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and on the ensuing possession Sam Collinson added a goal to extend the lead to 5-0.  Thomas Fogarty put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage just over a minute later.  The two teams traded goals, before Elerick connected with Justin Darley for a goal to give the Patriots an 8-1 lead midway through the second quarter.  Henry Quaye recorded three of UC's next four goals, including a man-up goal, to give Cumberlands a 12-1 lead with 2:56 remaining.  Patriots added another goal as Whitten McCune found Sam Collinson in front of the cage for a goal to make it 13-1 at the break.

The second half was a defensive battle as both teams score a goal apiece, while UC limited Union to six shot and forced 20 turnovers.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Crouch, who finished with five points (two goals, three assists).  Quaye added a hat trick, while Collinson and Elerick each chipped in a pair of goals.

Swann went 16-19 on faceoffs with six ground balls, Nick DiFranco and Jake Morgan each tallied four caused turnovers.  Mitchell scooped a team-high seven ground balls, while Morgan added six.  Jaret Williamson finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

The Patriots will return to the field Friday, April 20, in the semifinals of the AAC Tournament.  The game is slated for 7 p.m. with live video available here and live stats available here.
