Softball Slips to Tigers on Senior Day

Williamsburg, KY – The Patriot softball team honored their four seniors on Saturday as they hosted the Tigers of Georgetown College for the final two games of their season series. Unfortunately, it was two games that would get away from UC as Georgetown would win both contests on Saturday by scores of 5-4, dropping the Patriots to 13-25 on the season and 6-12 in MSC play.

In game one, Georgetown would take an early lead in the second. With two on and one down, Abigail James would hit her first home run of the year to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. UC would respond though in the bottom of the innings. After a leadoff triple by MiKayla Vires and a walk to Haley Kilburn to put runners on the corners, Lexi Jones would hit a RBI single to make it 3-1. Madison Huber would follow with a RBI single to left to cut it down to 3-2. After another out was made, Morgan Santos would hit another RBI single to left-center to tie the game up at 3-3 after two complete.

GC would retake the lead on a sac fly in the top of the fourth, making it 4-3 Tigers. UC would finally tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by Jones to make it 4-4. Entering the seventh tied, Georgetown would make a mark with a RBI single from Kara Howard to go ahead 5-4. The Patriots would put two runners on with one down in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity as they would fall 5-4 in game one.

The loss was tagged to Tara Comer out of the bullpen as she threw 2.2 innings of relief, giving up one earned run on two hits and a walk. Starter Sydney Pennycuff went 4.1 innings in the start, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk with no strikeouts.

Game two saw a similar outcome for the Patriots. Game two's start was given to Sydney Maynard, but she was tagged early in the contest. Georgetown would begin the game with a runner reaching on an E5, making her way all the way around to third. A 5-3 groundout later in the inning would bring her home, making it 1-0 Tigers. GC would add a run in the third on a sacrifice fly as well as one on a RBI single in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0.

The Patriots responded in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI triple from Hannah Stephenson, a RBI single from Vires, and a final run scoring on an E5 on a fielder's choice, tying the game up at 3-3 after four complete. Georgetown would get two more runs in the fifth, one on a RBI double and another on a RBI single, to take a 5-3 lead which held until the seventh.

UC would have one on with two down in the bottom of the inning when Elisa Mauldin would smack a RBI single to center, cutting the lead to 5-4. With the tying run on, the Patriots would pop up behind the catcher to end the game, falling 5-4 once again to the Tigers.

The loss would go to Syndey Maynard as she gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in four innings of work. Comer would come in to throw the final three innings of play, allowing no runs on just three hits in the contests.

The Patriots return to play on Wednesday, April 18th as they host the Bears of the University of Pikeville for a Mid-South Conference doubleheader. First game is set to begin at 4 pm.
