Bat Pats Knockout Knights in Dominating Doubleheader

Grayson, KY – The UC Baseball team returned to the diamond in northeastern Kentucky on Friday as they would take on the Knights of Kentucky Christian University for a non-conference doubleheader. UC would score 30 runs over the two contests, defeating KCU 19-3 in game one before earning an 11-1 win in game two. The pair of victories pushes the #23 ranked Patriots to 32-4 overall on the season.

After taking an early lead in game one, UC would score 13 runs over the final three innings to earn the run rule victory in eight innings. Cody Spencer would earn the win going 5.2 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks while fanning eight on strikes. Mason Kleist would throw the final 2.1 innings of work, allowing no runs on just two hits while sitting four down on strikes.

From the plate, it was five Patriots who led the way with multiple hits in the contest to take the win. Roberto Prado would go 3-3 from the leadoff spot with a double, a sacrifice, a walk, a RBI, and three runs scored. Orley Arellano added a 4-5 performance with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Alex Dominguez also chipped in three hits including a double, a walk, a stolen base, three RBI, and two runs scored. Designated hitter Reed Spata would go 3-4 with a double, a RBI, a stolen base, and score four times. Catcher Andrew Ramos added a 2-3 performance with a walk and two RBI in the win.

Game two was much of the same for UC as starting pitcher Nicholas Purpera had a no-hitter through five innings, but would give up a single to the right side for the lone hit of the ballgame in an 11-1 victory. He would finish the game going 5.1 innings allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out eight. Lucas Jones would secure the final five outs of the game with no hits or walks while striking out two.

In this one, only two Patriots would accumulate multiple hits, but a handful of Patriots would do a plethora of damage. Prado would again have a great game from the plate, but would not record an at-bat drawing three walks and a hit-by-pitch, stole four bases, and scored three times. Dominguez continued his hot hitting on the day, going 2-3 with a walk, four RBI, and a run scored. Robbie Stroub also tallied two hits on four at-bats with a run scored. Garryn Wood would also ink a two-run pinch hit home run, his first of the season, in the seventh to push the Patriots to the ten-run lead.

The Pats return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 10th at home as they host Union College for a game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
