Second-Seed Patriots Fall in Semifinals of NAIA Invitational

Grand Rapids, MI – The second-seed UC Women's Lacrosse team rallied for down two goals in the first half however it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell to third-seed Indiana Tech 17-8 in the semifinals of the NAIA Invitational Friday afternoon at the AQ Athletic Field.  With the win the Warriors improve to 18-3, while the Patriots finish the season 20-2.

Emily Crump started the game by making three saves in the first four minutes of the game to keep the game scoreless.  Indiana Tech got on the board first as they converted a free position goal. Emily Heim won the ensuing draw control, raced up field and netted a free position goal to tie the game 1-1.  The Warriors scored twice, before UC took advantage of an Indiana Tech penalty as Samantha Tullar scored a man-up goal to cut the deficit to 3-2.  Indiana Tech added a goal, before Tullar netted two straight goals, in a 15 second span, to even the score at 4-4.  A Jennifer Banks' goal put Indiana Tech back in front with 3:03 remaining.  The score remained that way until the 1:30 mark when Amanda Phillips connected with Tullar for a goal to tie the game 5-5 at the break.

Indiana Tech netted 11 of the first 12 goals of the second half to take a 16-6 lead with 8:38 remaining.  Minutes later, Tristyn Hudson put a well-placed shot into the top left corner of the cage for a goal.  Angelica Makoski found Katie Brewer in front of the cage for a goal to cut the deficit to 16-8.  Indiana Tech added a goal in the final minute for the 17-8 final.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Crump, who finished with a game-high 16 saves.  Tullar netted four goals, while Heim added a pair of goals and two caused turnovers.  Briana Kucis and Elizabeth Fladung each recorded two caused turnovers in the game.

Cumberlands finish the season setting new program records for wins (20), wins over ranked opponent (8), highest-ranking (second). The Patriots also captured their first AAC regular season and tournament titles, while qualifying for the NAIA Invitational for the first time in program history.
