Williamsburg, KY – The UC Baseball Patriots struggled to get their offense going against third-seed Point Park as the Pioneers notched 12 hits, including a pair of home runs, to knock off second-seed Cumberlands 8-2 in the second game of the Williamsburg Bracket of the NAIA Baseball Opening Round Monday afternoon at Doyle Buhl Stadium. With the win, Point Park advances into the winner's bracket and improves to 46-7, while the Patriots move to 46-10 on the year and now will face Marian later Monday night in an elimination game.
After a scoreless first inning, Point Park began their run of five straight scoring innings with a two run home run from Reynaldo Adames to left field, his fourth of the year, to give Point Park a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers added a run in the third on a bases loaded, RBI groundout by Richard Perez to extend their lead to 3-0. In the top of the fourth, Ben Herstine smashed a solo home run to left, his ninth home run of the season, to extend the lead to 4-0. Cole Horew followed with a double and scored on an Edberg Dominguez RBI single to give Point Park a 5-0 advantage. Point Park added a run in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead.
Cumberlands looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth as
Alex Dominguez hit a two-out single to left field.
Bryan Benz followed with a two-run shot to left, his team leading 19th home run on the year, cutting the score to 8-2. That was the closest Cumberlands got as Nicholas Beardsley got the final seven outs for his second complete game of the season.
Josh Avila took the loss after throwing 3.1 innings scattering seven hits and five runs while fanning three on strikes. Beardsley would get the win for Point Park with a complete game effort scattering two runs on seven hits and three walks while sitting five down on strikes.
The Patriots now will have to take on the Knights of Marian University in an elimination game on Monday night at approximately 10:30 pm at Doyle Buhl Stadium in Williamsburg. Live video and statistics will be available on the UC Sports Network.
