Patriots Softball Drops Opening Game of MSC Tournament

Bowling Green, KY – The University of the Cumberlands softball team opened up the Mid-South Conference tournament taking on 11th-ranked and second-seed Lindsey Wilson at Michael O. Buchanon Park. UC scored first but the Blue Raiders pulled out a 12-3 win to advance in the winners' bracket, while the Patriots move to the losers' bracket.

UC (16-33) got on the board first as Morgan Santos hit a one-out triple to deep left-center field. Elisa Mauldin followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Santos and giving the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson (38-12) responded with six runs, only one of which was earned, in the bottom of the first to take a 6-1 lead.

Cumberlands put a runner on base in both the second and third inning as Hayley Kilburn and Mauldin were both hit by the pitch, however neither runner was able to advance into scoring position.

The Blue Raiders plated four in the third and two in the fourth to extend their lead to 12-1.

The Patriots looked to battle back in the top of the fifth as Tara Comer singled up the middle to lead off the inning.  Madison Huber followed with a single to advance pinch-runner Morgan Ellis to second.  Two batters later Santos singled to center and a defensive miscue allowed Ellis to score and cut the deficit to 12-2.  Mauldin drilled an RBI single to left scoring Huber and making it 12-3.  That was the closest UC got as Annabelle Ramirez recorded the final two outs for the 12-3 final.

Mauldin led the way for the Patriots going 1-2 with a pair of RBI, while Santos added two hits and a run scored.

The Patriots will move to the loser bracket of the MSC Tournament and face the loser of the Georgetown vs. Pikeville game.  The game is scheduled to be played later tonight but stayed tuned to the MSC website or Cumberlands social media for the most up-to-date information.
