Hurley Deals Another Gem in Win over Georgetown; Advances to MSC Tournament Title Game

Bowling Green, KY – In the second game of the day for the UC Baseball team, the Patriots top-seeded Patriots looked to knock off the Tigers of Georgetown College in an elimination game and punch their ticket to the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship game on Monday morning. It was a big inning in the middle of the game that pushed the Patriots well out in front as they never looked back, coming away with an 11-1 win over the Tigers. The win improves the Patriots to a 46-8 record, breaking the school record for wins in a season, and sending them to tomorrow's MSC Tournament Championship game.

Zach Hurley would take the rubber in this contest and looked sharp throughout the entire contest. His offense had his back as well. In the bottom of the second, Bryan Benz would reach via an E6 on Georgetown. J.C. Santos would follow with a deep single off the right field wall. An error on the right fielder Diego Perez was administered as he bobbled picking up the ball, allowing both Benz and Santos to advance 90 feet into scoring position. Robbie Stroub would then reach on an error by GC's shortstop Larkin Heldt, his second of the inning and third on the team, allowing Benz to score to give UC an early 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Benz battled through an at-bat to pick up a full count single up the middle. Santos followed with a deep double down the right field line, bring Benz home to extend the lead to 2-0 Patriots. Stroub followed with a single to put runners on the corners for Reed Spata. He would ground one to the right side but it was booted by GC's Antonio Monroy, the fourth error in the game for the Tigers, allowing Santos to score to make it 3-0 UC. A RBI single followed from Roberto Prado, bringing home Stroub to give Cumberlands a 4-0 advantage.

That was enough to run off GC starting pitcher Shamon Moss as Kyle Fieger would enter the game. Still in the fourth, Orley Arellano would greet him with a RBI single to right, bringing home Spata to push the lead to 5-0. Raudy Martinez then came to bat and brought home a pair of runs on a two-run double down the left field line, making it 7-0 Patriots. UC would load the bases again in the frame for Santos who would single through the hole on the left side, bringing two more across the plate to give the Patriots a 9-0 lead through four complete.

The offense continued to roll in the fifth for the Patriots. After a leadoff walk and wild pitch to send Spata to second, a RBI single up the middle by Prado would bring home Spata, giving UC a 10-0 lead. With two on a two down, Andrew Ramos would single to right to bring home another run, adding to the lead to make it 11-0 Patriots after five.

Georgetown would find their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single by Jake Purkins to make it 11-1 Pats. The Tigers would threaten, but Hurley would get out of a jam, leaving two runners on in the inning.

Hurley would toss another 1.2 innings of masterful work before Lucas Jones would come in to complete the game for the Patriots, sending them to the MSC Tournament Championship for the second straight season with an 11-1 victory over the Tigers of Georgetown.

Hurley would get the win going 8.2 innings allowing just one run on 10 hits and two walks while striking out eight. Jones would retire the only batter he faced on one pitch, a groundout to short.

The Patriots will be back in action on Monday, May 7th as they will face second-seeded Campbellsville University in the MSC Tournament Championship, needing to win two to take home the tournament title. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 am eastern time. You can catch the game live online simulcast on the Mid-South Conference Sports Network and the Sporting Times Broadcast Network.
