Caldwell’s Golden Goal Propels Men’s Soccer to 2-1 Double Overtime Win over Union

Williamsburg, KY – University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team defeated Union College 2-1 in double overtime on a golden goal headed in by Joel Caldwell in the 102' minute on Saturday at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.

Cumberlands (2-0-1) was the aggressor for much of the first half — outshooting Union (2-1-0) 12-3 (3-1 shots on goal), but the Bulldogs struck for the only goal of the period. In the 10' minute, Eden Gumbs took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that found the upper right part of the net. Patriot forwards Sergio Infantes and Marvin van der Made posted a shot on goal in the 11' minute and 30' minute, respectively. However, the Bulldogs' goalkeeper Pedro Muller Moreira (2-1-0) kept the Pats off the scoreboard to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.

UC continued to control play in the second half and outshot Union 12-4, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal, in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Cumberlands' offensive pressure paid off when defender Nicklas Nancke, who had subbed into the match, scored the equalizer in the 83' minute. Infantes dribbled past the midfield line and played the ball ahead to Nancke, who had gotten behind the defenders. Nancke dribbled around the goalkeeper and scored into an empty net for his first goal of the season. Infantes tallied his first assist and point as a Patriot on the play. The score remained tied 1-1 as regulation ended.

In the first overtime, Union had the only shot on target before the field was cleared for a lightning delay with 1:36 remaining in the period. The delay lasted almost an hour and a half before the match was resumed. Neither team scored as time expired in the first overtime period.

In the second overtime, Cumberlands struck quickly to win the match 2-1. Just over a minute into the period, Nancke played the ball to Infantes, who crossed the ball into the box for Caldwell, who headed it in for the golden goal.

Nancke led all players with three points in the match, while Infantes tallied a match-high two assists. Caldwell scored the third game-winning goal of his Patriot career.

Ahmed Ghatwary (1-0-0) made three saves in net for the Patriots, while Muller Moreira stopped eight shots for the Bulldogs.

Cumberlands outshot Union 25-8 (10-4 shots on goal) in the match.

The Patriots return to action at West Virginia University Institute of Technology on Wednesday, September 5 in Beckley, WV. Live video is available here, while live stats are available here
