Second Half Surge Send Patriots to Victory over Tigers to Stay Unbeaten

Williamsburg, KY – UC Football use a second half surge of points along with a brilliant performance on the ground by Milton Shelton would push the Patriots to another victory on Saturday over the Tigers of Campbellsville by a score of 35-21. The win extends UC's impressive run over the Tigers, winning 14 of the last 15 meetings and now 7-1 at home in the last eight contests against Campbellsville. Cumberlands now sits at 4-0 overall on the season.

Scoring would not get started until late in the first quarter as Campbellsville would be the first to strike. A 13-play drive would eat up over five minutes of clock before Ormoni Zanders would carry it in from 13 yards out to put the Tigers on top. The PAT from Noah Bicksler was good, giving CU the 7-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Midway through the second, UC's offense would find a bit of rhythm. Josiah Robbins would complete six of seven passes attempted on the eight play drive that was capped with a touchdown pass from 13 yards out to Joronnie Hinton. The point after by Devon McMillin was good as the game was now tied 7-7 with just under four minutes to play in the half. Campbellsville would then strike with the big play. On a 2nd and 20 play from their 33 yard line, CU quarterback Jeremy Hinds would find Kendon Young for a 67 yard TD pass to push CU back out front. The extra point was good, giving the Tigers a 14-7 edge at the half.

The second half saw UC's team fight through the adversity, especially in the third quarter. After forcing the Tigers to punt on their first possession, it was Milton Shelton who saw his number called upon in a big way. On the second play of the drive, Shelton would find a seam and sprint 73 yards for the game tying score. The point after was good, knotting the game up at 14-14.

After punts were traded by the teams, UC would finally get their first lead of the contest. After a 33 yard punt return by Hinton would put the Patriots in great field position, it was Austin Ysidro coming up with two big plays. He would first make a big catch on 4th and 3 to convert for a first and goal situation. Then, he would follow with a four yard TD run to push UC out front for good. McMillin's PAT was good, making it 21-14 Pats with just over three minutes to play in the third.

Campbellsville would start their next drive in good field position. On the first play, Hinds would scamper ahead for first down yardage, but Brad Montgomery would force a fumble as he was bringing Hinds down that would be recovered by UC's Adam Johnson, giving the Patriots the ball back quickly. On the next play, it was the flea flicker from Robbins to Shelton, back to Robbins, and then downfield 57 yards to Brandon Stuckey for another Patriot touchdown. The point after was good, pushing the lead to 28-14 entering the fourth quarter.

On another long drive by Campbellsville that covered 12 plays and nearly six minutes, the Tigers would find the end zone to cut into UC's lead. Backup quarterback Josh Davis would enter the game and find Brayden Russell for a 10 yard TD pass. The Tigers' PAT was good, making it 28-21 Patriots with just over five minutes to play. From there, it was Shelton who answered the call again. After a 21 yard carry by Shelton to start the drive, he would take his second touch 34 yards to paydirt, capping off the Patriots 35-21 win over the Tigers.

Robbins would manage the game well for the Patriots. Through the air, he would go 12-17 for 148 yards and two TDs, giving up just one sack in the game. With this performance, Robbins surpassed the 2,500 yards passing mark for his career. Shelton would get it done on the ground, carrying the ball 15 times for a career-high 213 yards and a pair of scores. He is the first Patriot to rush for over 200 yards in a game since Hunter Lewis did against Bluefield in 2014. Stuckey would have his only catch on the night net him 57 yards and a TD while Hinton corralled four passes for 40 yards and a score.

Defensively, three Patriots would tally double digit tackles in the win. Tyler Pendleton led the way with 15 total tackles (six solo) with two tackles for loss. Cole Genders added 12 tackles (two solo) while Johnson pitched in 10 tackles (six solo) along with 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. McMillin also played a big part on special teams in the contest. While going 5-5 on PATs, he also had six punts for an average of 44 yards each with two over 50 yards and two pinning the Tigers inside their 20 yard line.
