Frankfort, KY – Stepping away from conference play the UC volleyball team had four players record double-digit kills as they Patriots defeated Kentucky State 3-2 (25-10, 22-25, 25-11, 18-25, 16-14) Tuesday night. With the win the Patriots improve to 11-7, while the Thorobreds fall to 7-16.
Cumberlands used a pair of Makenzie Koch service aces and a kill to jumped out to an early 6-2 in the first set. After a Kentucky State point, UC went on another 6-1 run, aided by a pair of
Megan Jackson kills to extend the lead to 12-4. The Patriots continued to dominate scoring ten of the next 14 points to take a 22-8 advantage. The Thorobreds notched back-to-back points, before
Lily Chapman recorded a kill and a block to give Cumberlands the first set 25-10.
Kentucky State jumped out to a quick lead in the second set and would hold on to take the set 25-22 and even the score at 1-1.
The Patriots took advantage of Kentucky States miscues to begin the third set and take a 4-0 lead.
Lynsey Short would assist on the Patriots next four points to extend their lead to 8-4. Cumberlands would use runs of 4-0 and 5-0 to extend their lead to 21-9. A pair of
Anna Zuniga kills paired with an
Ashley Sobocinski kill and service ace gave UC the set 25-11 and the 2-1 lead in the match.
The Thorobreds would force a deceive fifth set after winning the fourth set 25-18. In the fifth set, Kentucky State to an early 4-3 lead however three straight points put UC ahead 6-4. The Thorobreds scored four of the next five points to take an 8-7 advantage at the switch. After the teams switched sides, Chapman notch three kills to put the Patriots back in front 11-9. The lead changed once more before the game saw ties at 12-12, 13-13, and 14-14. Cumberlands recorded back-to-back points to take the fifth set 16-14 and the 3-2 win.
Sobocinski led the way for Cumberlands with 13 kills, five digs, and a pair of service aces. Jackson and Koch finished with 11 kills apiece, while Chapman chipped in ten. Short dished out 27 assists, while Zuniga added a career-high ten assists.
The Patriots will return to action Saturday, September 29, when they travel to Marietta, GA to take on MSC foe Life at 6 p.m.
