Pikeville, KY – An early 13-0 run spelled trouble for the UC Women's Basketball on Saturday as they traveled to take on the University of Pikeville Bears in Mid-South Conference play. Cumberlands would fight back in a couple of different spots during the contest, but were unable to overcome the early deficit as the fell to the Bears 82-68. The loss sends UC's record to 12-6 on the season and 0-3 in MSC play.
After falling behind 13-0 in the first five minutes of play, the Patriots would struggle to cut into the lead early as they trailed 23-12 after the first quarter. The closest UC could pull to was ten in the frame as UPike would extend the gap to 41-25 at the halftime break. The entirety of the second half was a back and forth matchup as the deficit was just too much for UC to overcome. The Patriots now will look to rebound after dropping their first three MSC games on the road this season.
Three Patriots tallied double figures led by
Shayla Simpson with 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals.
Megan Morton added 11 points off the bench with five rebounds while
Hannah Lawson chipped in ten points. Cumberlands shot 35.5% from the field and 29.4% (5-17) from beyond the arc. UC was just over 50% from the charity stripe at 9-16.
The Bears had four in double digits including a pair of double-doubles. Brianna Burbridge led all scorers with 25 points with 15 rebounds while Emily Baker added 16 points and 11 boards. UPike shot 45.5% from the floor along with 79.2% from the free throw line.
UC returns home for MSC play on Thursday, January 17th as they host the Tigers of Georgetown College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
