Patriots Rally Late to Knock Off Phoenix 59-58

Williamsburg, KYMalik Colvin-Seldon recorded a steal and dunked the game-winning bucket with 18 seconds remaining to give the UC Men's Basketball team a 59-58 win over Cumberland University Saturday afternoon at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. With the win Patriots extend their win streak to four straight and improve to 17-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Phoenix fall to 9-8 and 2-4 against the MSC.

Both teams came out strong, trading baskets over the course of the first five minutes, which kept the score even at 9-9. On UC's next possession Nnamdi Van Dulm found Jordan Griggs for a three pointer to put UC back in front 12-9. Over the course of the next three minutes, UC outscored Cumberland 5-4 to take a 17-13 lead with 12:15 remaining in the first half. Two minutes later, Colvin-Seldon and Griggs combined for five unanswered points to extend the Patriots lead to 8 points mid-way through the first half. Travon Labranche and Austin Hall both connected from long-range to push the Patriots lead to 29-19, Cumberland's largest lead of the game, with 7:04 remaining. Colvin-Seldon and Caleb Taylor combined for UC's final six points of the first half, however the Phoenix ended the first half on a 12-6 run, bringing the score to 35-31 at the break.

The second half began similar to the start of the game with both teams trading buckets over the first three minutes. Cumberland went on a 15-2 run, spanning seven minutes to take a 50-42 lead, their largest of the game, with 10:48 remaining. Colvin-Seldon netted four straight points combined with a Griggs three pointer to cut the deficit to 52-49 with 7:16 remaining. Coming out of a Cumberland timeout, the Patriots scored six unanswered points, capped off by a Taylor free throw to give UC a 55-54 lead with 3:44 remaining. Cumberland responded with back-to-back buckets to retake the lead 58-55, with 1:14 left. Out of a Patriot timeout, Van Dulm sank a bank shot to bring UC within a point. Cumberlands took advantage of a Tranard Chester turnover as Colvin-Seldon scored go-ahead bucket with 18 seconds remaining. The Phoenix looked for the go-ahead score, however could not convert as the Patriots held on for the 59-58 win.

Colvin-Seldon led the Patriots with 19 points and four rebounds. Griggs added another 14 points, while Taylor contributed with nine points and 12 rebounds.
