Atlanta, GA – UC Women's Basketball returned to action on Thursday for the first time since Christmas in a road affair against the Cougars of Carver College. After an hour delay due to administrative circumstances, the Patriots got things going and in a hurry. In a game that saw many unusual and out of the ordinary situations, the Patriots would pull away with a 98-47 win over the Cougars. The victory pushed Cumberlands to 12-3 overall on the season.
Carver jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the game, but after taking the lead 17-15 in the first quarter, Cumberlands would never look back. Holding a 21-17 lead at the end of one, the Patriots exploded to outscore the Cougars 30-10 in the second to jump out to a 51-27 advantage at the break. Another big quarter for the Patriots in the third extended the lead to 81-39 before a running clock in the final ten minutes would close the game with UC coming out on top by 51.
Hannah Lawson led all scorers with a career-high 27 points on 10-14 shooting (6-8 3 PT) to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists.
Shayla Simpson chipped in UC's fifth double-double double with 21 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Cumberlands as a team shot 45.5% from the floor and 44.4% from beyond the three-point stripe. UC also scored 20 second chance points, 25 points off turnovers, and 28 points down low in the paint.
Cumberlands now turns their attention to Saturday, January 5
th as they travel to Marietta, Georgia to take on the Running Eagles of Life University in their first Mid-South Conference game of the season. Tip-off is set for 2 pm.
