UC Volleyball Comes Up Short Against #13 Lindsey Wilson

Columbia, KY – Freshman Lexi Lester recorded her fourth double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Patriots volleyball team fell 3-0 (17-25, 17-25, 17-25) to 13th-ranked Lindsey Wilson Tuesday night at the Biggers Sports Complex. With the win the Blue Raiders improve to 19-4 and 10-2 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 12-10 overall and 3-7 against the MSC.

In the first set Cumberlands recorded five of the first six points of the match, including back-to-back aces from Jennifer Stein to take a 5-1 lead. Lindsey Wilson evened the score before Stein connected with Shelby Lackey for a kill to put UC back in front 6-5.  Lily Chapman recorded consecutive kills to extend the Patriots advantage to 10-8. Lindsey Wilson tallied three straight points before a Leah Crist block sparked a Patriot 5-2 rally to give UC a 15-13 edge. The two teams traded points leaving the set tied three times with that last one coming at 17-17.  The Blue Raiders scored eight unanswered points to close out the set and take the 1-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson used a three-point and five-point run to dig the Patriots into a 19-10 deficit in the second set.  The two teams traded points before Lester found Mackenzie Koch and Olivia Verdecchia for back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 20-13.  Chapman added a pair of kills as part of a 4-1 run to bring UC within six points, however, Lindsey Wilson notched a pair of points to take the set 25-17 and extend their lead to 2-0.

Juliet Montague tallied her lone ace of the match to give Cumberlands a 6-5 lead in the third set.  After the set was tied four times, Lindsey Wilson used a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 edge.  The Patriots battled back getting kills from Chapman and Anna Zuniga to cut the deficit to two points at 14-12.  Lindsey Wilson utilized a 9-5 run to close out set 25-17 and take the 3-0 win.

Lester finished with 12 assists and 11 digs, while Stein notched a team-high 16 digs and two service aces.  Chapman paced Cumberlands attack with nine kills, while Sobocinski added six.
