Lily Chapman and
Mackenzie Koch combined for 22 kills, however, it wasn't enough as the UC volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 26-24, 25-14) to (RV) Thomas More Saturday afternoon at the Connor Convocation Center. With the win, the Saints improve to 20-6 overall and 11-2 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 13-12 overall and 4-9 against the MSC.
UC found dug themselves into a 2-0 deficit to start the match. The Patriots battled back in the third set to avoid the sweep and cut the deficit to 2-1. In that set,
Abbie Genders tallied an assisted block, with
Leah Crist, and a kill to give UC a 3-2 lead. The two teams traded points leading to five ties and two lead changes to make it 8-8. Crist partnered with
Lily Chapman for back-to-back blocks to put UC back in front 10-8. Thomas More recorded six of the next nine points before UC responded with a 7-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. The teams traded points before Thomas More notched seven unanswered to take a 23-21 edge. Cumberlands went on a 5-1 run, capped off by a pair of kills from
Ashley Sobocinski and a
Juliet Montague ace to take the set 26-24.
UC wasn't able to force a fifth set as Thomas More took the fourth set 25-14 to win the match 3-1.
Chapman had a team-high 12 kills and three blocks, while Koch finished with ten kills. Sobocinski added nine kills and 15 digs. Crist led the UC defense with eight blocks to increase her season total to 128 so far.
The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, October 29, when they travel to Portsmouth, OH to face Shawnee State. First serve scheduled for 6 p.m. with live stats are available
