Williamsburg, KY- In the 86' of the match, Alanna Skinner scored the lone goal giving the Patriots women's soccer team the 1-0 win against the Georgetown Tigers Wednesday night at the UC Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. With the victory, UC improves to 7-1-1 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in conference play.
The Patriots offense came out strong, recording shots from Alba Lorca, AnihoaCamara, and Naira Lopez in the first ten minutes of the contest. Although unable to convert any of the shots to goals, the UC backline held the Tigers to only a pair of shots after twenty minutes of play. Cumberlands saw their best scoring opportunity come as Laura Navajas connected with Lopez for a shot on the doorstep of the GC goal. However, Tiger's goalie Megan Martin made the save, keeping the Patriots scoreless with 29:37 remaining. As time dwindled down, Georgetown midfielder Cleome Kerseg dribbled past the UC defense and sent a shot towards the lower-left corner where a diving save by Nicole Panis prevented the goal, keeping both teams scoreless headed into halftime.
As the second half got underway, GC looked to get on the scoreboard early, recording a shot 51 seconds into the half forcing Panis to make her fourth save of the evening. Micha Harris and Jillian Zurborg found themselves open for a pair of shots, but both were saved by Martin with 10:26 remaining in regulation. Cumberlands offense continued to be relentless, and with 4:50 left in the match, Skinner sent a rocket off her left foot, sailing just under the crossbar for the game-winning goal.
The match-clinching goal was the sophomore's first score of the season. With the win, the UC backline earns its fifth shutout this year.
UC returns to action Saturday, October 12, when they take on the Thomas More Saints at home for their third conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 5:00 pm. Live video will be available here, while live stats will be available here.
