Bowling Green, KY – Despite a late comeback, the Patriots fell in a shootout to rival Lindsey Wilson in the Mid-South Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday night, closing out the year in the postseason.
The winner of Sunday's semifinal could not be decided after 110 minutes of play, resulting in the shootout. The Blue Raiders took the edge to move on, scoring two of three into the upper right while the Patriots failed to convert.
The Patriots forced overtime with
Marvin van der Made scoring the equalizer in the 49th minute. The senior headed in the goal on the converted corner taken by
Sergio Infantes Castell.
With the loss, Van der Made concluded his Patriots career with 28 goals scored and nine assists.
The Blue Raiders had the 2-1 advantage going into halftime. The Patriots lone goal on the score-line in the first half came to their own fortune as Lindsey Wilson's defender scored an own goal in an attempt to clear
Joel Drewery's cross away in the ninth minute.
The Patriots controlled a majority of the game however were limited in shot opportunities by the Blue Raider defensive line. UC rallied 11 total shots with three on frame, led by Luis Jara with three,
Milan Stojanovic with two, and Infantes with two.
Meanwhile, the Cumberlands defense held two-seeded Lindsey Wilson to four shots on goal in the contest, allowing two. Rookie keeper
Akililu Zambataro collected two saves on 15 shots faced as well as several crosses into the box.
The Patriots highlight their night with a converted corner kick in the second half, meanwhile defending against 13 corners by the opposition, including six in a seven-minute span.
The Mid-South Conference saw its first game go to a shootout since the 2016 finals between Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville.
The Patriots move to 10-6-2 with Sunday's tie, holding onto the best year to date under head coach
Chris LeFevre. The Patriots claimed third in the regular season before falling out in the MSC semifinals.
