Women’s Basketball Soars over Eagles on the Road

Pippa Passes, KY – A full week between games is what the Patriot Women's Basketball team had to endure this week. Not seeing action since last Saturday's win of Coastal Georgia, the Patriots would travel this week to Pippa Passes to take on the Eagles of Alice Lloyd College. Cumberlands would dominate the offensive glass as they would widen the gap each quarter in route to a 79-58 win over the Eagles, improving their record to 7-1 on the season.

The Eagles would jump out front 12-4 in the first five minutes of the contest. The Patriots would then outscore Alice Lloyd 20-7 over the final five minutes including 4-4 from beyond the arc to take a 24-19 lead into the second quarter. The Patriot trio from Mozambique (Silvia Veloso, Vilma Covane, Carla Covane) along with Reagan Begole would dominate the second quarter for the Patriots, scoring all 14 points between them to give UC a 38-31 lead at the halftime break.

The Patriots came out early in the third and dominated down low, scoring their first eight points in the paint to go ahead 46-34 midway through the quarter. UC would pull away later in the frame, holding a 58-43 lead entering the fourth. There, Alice Lloyd cut the lead down to 11, but that was a close as they could get as UC eventually capped off the game on another 14-7 run to win the game 79-58.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Vilma Covane with 19 points and five rebounds to go with a pair of assists. Abbi Douglas added 15 points off the bench with five rebounds and three steals. Hannah Lawson and Megan Morton each chipped in nine points on the night as well.

UC shot 43.1% on the night while firing 38.9% from deep. The Patriots tallied 46 points in the paint while snagging 26 points off of 24 Eagles' turnovers. Alice Lloyd was led by Jayla Spurlock with 11 points and a pair of blocks.

Cumberlands now waits another week for their next contest, but this one comes back home to the friendly confines of the O. Wayne Rollins Center and Randy Vernon Court as they will be the first game of a women's/men's doubleleader against Simmons College of Kentucky. That game will tip off at 1 PM eastern time.
