Patriots Fall to Blue Raiders in Double Overtime

Bowling Green, KY - The 17th ranked Cumberlands women's soccer team fell to #7 Lindsey Wilson 2-1 in doubleovertime in the MSC Championship Saturday afternoon. Senior Emily Willoughby scored the lone goal in the 18' assisted by Shara Randez. The Patriots move to 14-3-1 on the season and will look to continue their postseason run with an At-Large Bid to the NAIA National Tournament.

The matchup between the Patriots and Blue Raiders lived up to the hype from the first whistle. A battle for possession ensued but the offensive duo of Naira Lopez and Randez connected with the ball to give Patriots back-to-back shots on goal. Lindsey Wilson found their momentum and turned to MSC Player of the Year, Sina Cavelti, in the 11' to score the first goal of the match. Patriots weren't down for long however, Randez found Willoughby on a give-and-go play to send the ball into the lower right corner to even the score at 1-1 with 27:36 remaining in the half. UC outshot LWC 9-6 over the remainder of the half but was unable to connect with the back of the net and both teams went into the locker room tied at one apiece.

Both teams started the second half with fire, but UC's Laura Navajas sent a rocket towards the net, however, Blue Raiders' GK came up for a clutch save to keep the score even in the 55'. Lindsey Wilson saw their best scoring opportunity come with 34:11 left in regulation when Cavelti took a shot towards goal but Alanna Skinner stepped in front to block it. The UC backline held the Blue Raiders without a shot for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime evened at 1-1.

Led by low defenders Jenna Rockwell and Amy Anderson, the Patriots flexed their defensive power in the first overtime not allowing a single shot from their opponent. Although they were unable to take any shots, LWC held UC scoreless and the match entered its second overtime. In the second overtime Blue Raiders' midfielder Mayu Satoh sent a shot that deflected off the Patriots defense and into the net, ending the match in 2-1 in favor of LWC.

With the victory, Lindsey Wilson continues the Mid-South dynasty winning their seventh-straight conference tournament title.

The Patriots hope to return to action later this month by earning an At-Large Bid to the NAIA National Tournament. UC will learn their fate on Monday, November 18 at noon on the NAIA National Tournament Selection Show. The broadcast will be available here.
