Seniors Lead Patriots to 3-0 Win in Home Finale

Williamsburg, KYLeah Crist, Mackenzie Koch, and Anna Zuniga combined for 18 kills, 32 assists, and eight blocks to lead the UC volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-22, 25-18) win over Pikeville in their home finale Sunday afternoon in the UC Volleyball Gym. The win marks the Patriots sixth sweep of the season and improves their record to 16-12 overall and 7-9 in conference play, while the Bears fall to 9-19 and 0-12 against the MSC.

The Patriots came out strong as Jennifer Stein opened the match serving for nine straight points.  A block from Ashley Sobocinski and Koch sparked another 5-0 run with the duo notching three kills to push the lead to 14-1.  Cumberlands added a 6-0 run with Zuniga recording a kill and two assists to extend the lead to 20-2.  Koch recorded a kill and an ace as part of a 4-0 run to make it 25-4, before Lily Chapman closed out the set with a kill to give UC the set 25-7 and the 1-0 lead.

Cumberlands and Pikeville traded points in the second set as the score was tied eight times.  UC took the lead on a Sobocinski kill, which sparked a 5-1 run to give UC a 14-10 edge.  Later in the set, the Patriots strung together a three straight points to give them a 22-17 lead. Pikeville responded with a 5-1 run, however, Zuniga connected with Crist and Abbie Genders for kills to close out the set 25-22 and extend the lead to 2-0.

The Patriots jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set in part to a pair of kills from Chapman.  The two teams traded points, until a Zuniga kill sparked a 5-1 run to extend Cumberlands lead to 13-7.  Crist and Genders teamed up for a block to spark another three-point run and give UC a 17-10 edge.  After trading points, Jessica Putnam notched an ace to close out the match as UC took the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Koch led the way with nine kills, three aces, and three blocks, while Crist tallied three blocks and six kills.  Sobocinski chipped in eight kills, while Chapman finished with seven.  Zuniga dished out 32 assists in the match along with two digs and two blocks.
