Campbellsville, KY – The University of the Cumberlands men's basketball team continued its hot shooting recording season-best 61.8% from the field and 60.7% from three-point range, while seven players reached double figures as the Patriots defeated Oakland City 117-73 Saturday afternoon at the Campbellsville Classic. It marks the first time this season that the Patriots surpassed the century mark as the Patriots improve to 7-2 heading into MSC play.
Caleb Taylor led the way for UC with 19 points and seven rebounds, while
Jordan Griggs posted a season-high 17 points.
Tevin Olison and
Danny Butt notched 16 and 15 points, respectfully, while
Ethan Snapp chipped in 12 points.
Jahi Hinson and
Hunter Bode scored ten points apiece in the win.
The Patriots opened the game on an 11-0 run, including five points from Griggs, three minutes into the game. The two teams traded buckets over the next couple of minutes until Nnamdi van Dulm and
Hunter Bode scored consecutive buckets to give UC a 21-10 lead. Cumberlands utilized a 13-2 run, capped off by a three from Olison, to extend their lead to 39-19 with 9:02 remaining. After the team traded field goals,
Chance Edwards sparked a 10-0 to close out the half with a three pointer to put the Patriots in front 69-35 at halftime.
Taylor recorded back-to-back baskets to start the half, in which he went 5-5 from the field and scored 12 of his game-high 19 points. Snapp added a jumped, while Hinson hit from long range to put Cumberlands in front 78-39, three minutes into the second half. Oakland City cut the lead to 33 points, before
Danny Butt hit from long range and Taylor converted an old-fashion three-point play to give UC a 91-54 lead midway through the second half. Minutes later van Dulm connected with
Hunter Bode for a dunk to push Cumberlands past the century mark 100-59 with 6:33 remaining. The Patriots outscored Oakland City 17-14, including eight points from
Danny Butt and Ryan Anders hitting his first collegiate three pointer for the 117-73 final.
The 117 points is the most points that UC scored since February 9, 2017 when they defeated Campbellsville 116-115 in five overtimes.
The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, December 3, as they host Thomas More in their conference opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. with live stats available
