Caleb Taylor recorded 15 points and 13 rebounds for his third straight double-double and six of the season, however, it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell to IU Southeast 94-76 Saturday afternoon at Randy Vernon Court. With the win the Grenadiers improve to 9-3 on the season, while the Patriots move to 8-4 overall.
Jordan Griggs led the way for the UC for consecutive games as he netted a team-high 18 points.
Steven Fitzgerald contributed 14 points and four rebounds, while
Bri'an Brown notched nine points, two rebounds, and a pair of assists in his season debut.
IU Southeast came out strong scoring the first 11 points of the game, before UC went on a 15-7 run to cut the deficit to 18-15 with 10:50 remaining. Cumberlands got three's from
Ethan Snapp, Griggs, and
Chance Edwards during that run. The Grenadiers utilized a 10-0 run and extended their lead to 32-20 with 5:49 left in the first half. Taylor sparked a 6-1 run for UC cutting the deficit to eight points at 33-25. IU Southeast closed out the half on a 13-6 run to take a 46-32 lead into the break.
Fitzgerald and Taylor ten of UC first 13 points of the second half as the Patriots cut the deficit to 56-45, five minutes in. IU Southeast went on a 14-6 run, before Fitzgerald drained a couple of free throws to make the score 70-53 midway through the half. The Grenadiers strong shooting continued as they went on a 22-12 run, over a seven minute span, to extend their lead to 92-65. Cumberlands scored 11 of the final 13 points, including a Griggs three for the 94-76 final.
The Patriots will return to action Sunday, December 29, as they take part in the Cumberlands Classic. UC will host Carver College at 4 p.m. on December 29, before facing Miami Hamilton on December 30 at 4 p.m. Live stats will be available
