Pats Walk Off with 13th Inning Win over Bulldogs in Rivalry Game

Pats Walk Off with 13th Inning Win over Bulldogs in Rivalry Game

Williamsburg, KY – The UC Baseball returned to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon as they hosted the Bulldogs of Union College in a non-conference rivalry game. As with many rivalry games, it was a back and forth game which would go extra innings before the Patriots would outlast and walk off with a 6-5 win in 13 innings over the Bulldogs. The win extends Cumberlands' win streak and improves the Patriots to 7-1 on the year.

The game was quiet until the bottom of the fourth after Union went to their bullpen for the first time in the contest. After an E5 allowing Marquis Orozco to reach first, Orley Arellano would send the pitch deep over the left field fence for a two-run hone run, his second of the season, to give UC a 2-0 lead.

The seventh inning was a tough one for Cumberlands. The Patriots used three pitchers in the frame that saw Union snag four runs as the Patriots had three hit-by-pitches, two walks, an error, and one hit to take a 4-2 lead. UC would answer in the bottom of the eighth again with the bat of Arellano. After Kevin Rolon's leadoff single, Arellano would turn on a 2-1 pitch and send it over the left-center field fence for his second long ball of the day, his third of the season, tying the game at 4-4 and sending the game to extra innings.

In the 12th, Union would strike. After a walk and two were retired, a stolen base coupled with a single to center field would give the Bulldogs a 5-4 advantage. In the bottom of the frame, UC's patience at the plate would prevail. Drawing four walks in the inning, a runner would come home to score to tie the game at 5-5.

Arellano would come in from center to pitch the top of the 13th as Bryan Benz would enter the game in left field. After walking the leadoff man, Orley would settle in and sit the next three batters down on strikes, giving the Patriots a chance to win it again in their half of the inning. After drawing a full count to lead off the inning, Benz would turn on a fastball in his only at-bat of the game and send it deep and out of the yard for his first home run of the year and give the Patriots a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs.

Arellano would get the win pitching the one inning and allowing no runs on no hits and a walk while striking out three. Starting pitcher Moise Carrasco would go six innings allowing no runs on two hits and a walk while striking out five in a no-decision.

UC's schedule for the week has now changed as their home series with IU-Kokomo has been scratched due to weather conditions. The Patriots will now travel south to LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Georgia for a four-game set with the Rams of Bluefield College on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on both days are set for 1 pm.
