Malik Colvin-Seldon notched a season-high 31 points and 14 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the 21
st-ranked UC men's basketball team fell to Cumberland 88-86 in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon. With the win the Phoenix improve to 11-14 overall and 4-10 against the Mid-South Conference, while the Patriots move to 21-9 and 7-7 in conference play.
Jordan Griggs got the Patriots off to a fast start scoring five of UC's first seven points as the Patriots jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Phoenix evened the score before
Caleb Taylor grabbed an offensive rebound and put back to give UC a 9-7 edge with 14:55 left in the first half. After the score was tied three at three different marks, Cumberland went on a 7-2 run to take a 21-16 lead with 11:08 left in opening half. Cumberlands stormed back with a 10-3 run over their own, including four points from
Jahi Hinson and Colvin-Seldon, to retake the lead. The two teams traded buckets as Cumberland went on a 10-2 run, spanning four minutes, to take a 39-31 advantage with 3:10 remaining. UC ended the half on an 8-3 run to cut the deficit to 42-39 at the break.
The Phoenix pushed their lead to 49-42 three minutes into the second half. Cumberlands continued to be cold from the field however sank four free throws to cut into the deficit. After each team netted a couple of baskets,
Chance Edwards dished out assists to Griggs and Colvin-Seldon as the Patriots cut the deficit to 58-55 midway through the second half. Cumberland outscored the Patriots 21-13 over the next seven minutes of action to extend their lead to 79-68. UC responded with a 9-2 run, which was capped off by a Hinson jumper cut the deficit to five points with 1:37 remaining. Later in the half Hinson converted a three-point play to bring the Patriots within two points at 86-84, however that's the closest they came as Cumberland sank a pair of free throws to hold on for the 88-86 final.
Colvin-Seldon notched his seventh double-double of the season, while Hinson and Griggs combined for 37 points. Taylor chipped in 13 rebounds and nine points in the game.
UC returns to action Saturday, March 2, as they travel to Pikeville, KY for the quarterfinals of Mid-South Conference Tournament. The Patriots will be the fourth-seed in tournament and play at noon.
