Marshall, MO – The third-ranked UC women's lacrosse team rebounded from their first setback of the season in impressive fashion as they defeated Missouri Valley 21-3 in the final game of this five-game road swing Monday afternoon. The Patriots had six players net at least two goals and four points in the win.
After five minutes of scoreless play UC (4-1) broke the scoreless game as
Amanda Phillips caused a Missouri Valley turnover and run a give-and-go with
Emily Heim to net the first goal of the game. Two minutes later, Phillips returned the favor connected with Heim for a goal to push the lead to 2-0.
Shea West recorded an unassisted goal before dishing out assists to
Jaclyn Berry and Phillips to give UC a 5-0 lead midway through the first half. Heim won the ensuing draw control and found
Bella Ricchiazzi cutting towards the cage for a goal, 16 seconds later. The two teams traded goals before the Patriots tallied six unanswered goals, including three from West, to take a 12-1 lead at the break.
Missouri Valley's (1-2) Jordan Anderson converted a free position goal 47 seconds into the second half to cut the lead to 12-2.
Katie Brewer and Berry each netted three goals as part of a 7-0 run, which spanned 21 minutes, to give Cumberlands a 20-2 lead with 5:42 remaining. Ricchiazzi notched her second goal of the game before the Vikings added a goal in the final minute for the 21-3 final.
Berry led the way for the Patriots with seven goals and an assist, while West and Brewer each finished with four goals apiece. Phillips chipped in four points to go along with a season-high four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Heim dished out a game-high four assists and scooped eight draw controls in the win.
Emily Cabrera made two saves as she notched her first win of the season.
UC returns to action Tuesday, March 5, when they return to Williamsburg to host Thomas More in their home opener. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live video of the game available
