Georgetown, KY – Eljay Cowherd lay-up with eight seconds remaining proved to be the difference the 17
th-ranked UC Men's Basketball fell to eighth-ranked Georgetown 80-79 Saturday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. With the win Tigers improve to 25-3 overall and 9-2 in conference play while the Patriots drop to 18-7 and 5-5 in MSC action.
It was a highly-contested game right from the opening tip as
Malik Colvin-Seldon connected with
Jordan Griggs for a three-pointer on the opening possession. Griggs hit another shot from long range two minutes later to extend UC's lead to 8-2. Georgetown used a 9-6 run, over the span of three minutes, before
Caleb Taylor grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to give the Patriots a 16-11 edge with 13:56 remaining. The two teams continued to trade baskets over the next six minutes until the Tigers went on a 9-3 run to take their first lead of the game 26-25 with 7:35 left. From that point, the game was tied six times ties over the course of the next six minutes, until Georgetown converted a three-point play to take a 42-40 lead into halftime.
Griggs continued his hot shooting as he hit a three-pointer to start the second half but the Patriots fell behind 53-45 three minutes in. UC responded with three straight field goals from Taylor, Colvin-Seldon, and
Jahi Hinson to cut the deficit to two points. Georgetown pushed their lead back to five points before a
Chance Edwards' four-point play put the Patriots back in front 59-58 with 11:11 remaining. Hinson and
Danny Butt combined to net the next five points to extend UC's lead to 64-58. Cumberlands pushed their lead to as eight points with a 73-65 lead with 6:26 left. Georgetown went on a 9-2 run, spanning 3:35, to cut the Patriots lead to 75-74. UC went 2-4 from the charity stripe coupled before Troy Steward hit a three-pointer with 1:37 to give the Tigers a one-point lead. On Cumberlands next possession Edwards drained a shot to put UC in front with 1:20 left. The Patriots looked to extend their lead however Cowherd converted a fast-break layup to give Georgetown the lead. UC had a final chance but was unable to get a shot off for the 80-79 final.
Colvin-Seldon lead the way for the Patriots with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Griggs added 14 points, including 4-5 from long range. Edwards chipped in 13 points as Taylor added ten points in the game.
UC returns to action Monday, February 11, as they travel to Campbellsville, KY to face the (RV) Tigers in a make-up from last Thursday postponed game. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with live video is available
