Women’s Tennis Late Rally Comes Up Short

Williamsburg, KY – Facing their third straight ranked opponent, the 19th-ranked UC women's tennis team won the final two matches but it wasn't enough as they fell to fourth-ranked Lindsey Wilson in 6-3 Wednesday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court.  With the win the Blue Raiders improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MSC, while the Patriots move to 4-3 and 0-1 in conference play.  

The Blue Raiders struck first with an 8-3 win at #2 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead.  Cumberlands responded at #3 doubles as Mikaela Fros and Sydney White jumped out to a 5-2 lead. The Blue Raiders evened the score at 5-5 and 6-6, before Fros and White took the final two sets for the 9-7 win to even the match at 1-1.  Fros and White improve to 3-2 on the season at #3 doubles.

At #1 doubles, 13th-ranked Jaclyn Jewell and Tomomi Nagao rallied from two games down to tie the match at 7-7. However that was the closed the duo came as 17th-ranked Alexandra Parra and Lina Sachica took the next two sets two win the point 9-7 and give Lindsey Wilson a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.

The Blue Raiders posted straight sets wins at #2 and #3 singles to extend their lead to 4-2.  At #1 singles, Nagao dropped the first set, however rallied to win the second set 6-2 and force a third set. 25th-ranked Parra took the third set 6-2 to clinch the match and give Lindsey Wilson a 5-1 lead.  The Blue Raiders added a point at #4 singles to make it 6-1. 

Cumberlands continued to battle as Luka Lyttle won her second straight match a 6-1, 7-6 win over Aibert at #5 singles.  Tessa Gray followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gabriella Pedroza at #6 singles for the 6-3 final. Gray has won two straight matches and improves to 3-2 on the season.  

The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, March 23, when they host 21st-ranked Georgetown in a MSC showdown.  The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the UC Tennis Complex.
