th-ranked Patriots fell to 21
st-ranked Georgetown 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court. With the win the Tigers improves to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the MSC, while the Patriots move to 4-4 and 0-2 in conference play.
Georgetown struck first as Katie Swanson and Lauren Moore posted an 8-3 win at #3 doubles to give the Tigers an early lead. At #1 doubles the duo of 13th-ranked
Tomomi Nagao and
Jaclyn Jewell squared off against GC's Amanda Moore and Maci Ferguson. Georgetown took the early 2-1 lead in the match, but Nagao and Jewell wouldn't go down easy as they clawed to a 4-3 advantage. The top Patriot duo would end up dropping the match 8-5 giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. At #2 doubles, Georgetown's Lauren Fazenbaker and Madelyn Kauffman race to a 4-1 lead, however, UC's
Tessa Gray and
Grace Steely took the next two games. With the match set at 4-3, Georgetown outscored Cumberlands 4-2 for the 8-5 final giving the Tigers a 3-0 advantage.
In singles play, 18th-ranked Nagao would start the Patriots comeback defeating Fazenbaker 6-1, 6-2 at #1 singles to cut the deficit to 3-1. Georgetown notched straight sets wins at #2 and #4 singles to take a 5-1 edge and clinch the match. At #3 singles
Mikaela Fros dropped the first set 6-4, before rallying to take the second set 7-6. It was a back-and-forth tiebreaker but Moore won the third set 10-7 to take the point.
Luka Lyttle and Perkins won a set at #5 and #6 singles, respectfully, but ultimately dropped the matches in three sets for the 8-1 final.
Cumberlands will get a day off before taking on Midway University on Monday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at the UC Tennis Complex.
