Williamsburg, KY – The 21st-ranked University of the Cumberlands men's tennis team sweep all six singles matches en route to a 7-2 win over Georgetown Saturday afternoon at the UC Tennis Complex. With the win the Patriots improve 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Tigers move to 4-8 overall and 0-1 against the Mid-South Conference.
The #1 doubles pairing of
Martin Barbier and
Eric Banoub kicked things off in Cumberlands favor. After dropping the first game to Georgetown, Barbier and Banoub would not flinch ending up victorious by the score of 8-2 to give the Patriots the early 1-0 lead. Georgetown evened the score as Josh Piunti and Cole McCreary overcame a 5-4 deficit to win #3 doubles 8-5. At #2 doubles, the Tigers' Hunter Nosek and Cole Wilson won a back-and-forth over
Aatu Merenheimo and
Luis Montull 8-6 to give Georgetown a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
The Patriots responded in dominate fashion winning all six singles matches. Merenheimo got things started with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles to tie the match at 2-2. At #1 singles, Barbier defeated Takeda 6-4, 6-3 giving the Patriots a 3-2 lead. With the win, Barbier improves to 6-2 on the season and extends his win streak to three matches.
At #3 singles, Montull won the first set 6-3 over Wilson. After dropping the second set, Montull rallied to take the third set 6-3 and extend UC's lead to 4-2.
Jan Dietrich and Banoub posted straight sets wins at #4 singles (6-2, 6-2) and #5 singles (6-2, 6-1) to clinch the match and give UC a 6-2 edge. At #6 singles, Kwok won the first set 6-2 over Nosek before Nosek retired in the second set giving Cumberlands the 7-2 win.
Cumberlands returns to the court Monday, March 25, as they host Midway. Start time is slated for 2 p.m. at the UC Tennis Complex.
