Pikeville, KY – The 20
th-ranked UC women's tennis team returned to the court today and defeated Pikeville 9-0 in a Mid-South Conference match-up Saturday afternoon. With the win the Patriots improve to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in MSC play, while the Bears move to 5-2 and 1-1 in conference play.
The duo of
Hannah Wampler and
Luka Lyttle, playing together for the first time this season, notched an 8-0 win at #3 doubles to give the Patriots the early lead.
Sydney White and
Mikaela Fros followed with an 8-4 win at #2 doubles, while
Tessa Gray and
Grace Steely completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at #1 doubles.
With a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, UC strong play continued as
Jaclyn Jewell defeated Andrea Hurtago 6-3, 6-4 to earn her first win at #1 singles this season. Cumberlands #2 through #6 singles combined to drop just three games to the Bears led by Fros, Steely, and Gray who all posted 6-0, 6-0 wins to push the lead to 7-0. Lyttle notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at #4 singles, while
Tomomi Nagao completed the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 doubles.
Fros and White improve to 6-3 overall and 3-1 against the MSC playing #3 doubles, while the tandem of Gray and Steely move to 6-4 on the season. Nagao extends her win streak in singles to four as Gray and Steely are both riding three match win streaks.
The Patriots will return to the court Wednesday, April 3, when they travel to Jefferson City, TN to face Carson-Newman. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
