Softball Falls to Georgetown in MSC Duel

Georgetown, KY – After winning 11 of their last 12 games, the Patriots softball team found themselves in a slump, falling to Georgetown in a pair of Friday road games. Cumberlands still holds a winning 21-15 record on the season, shifting to 9-7 in Mid-South Conference action.

GAME ONE: LOSS, 1-0
At the plate, the Patriots hitting momentum stumbled as Madison Huber was the only player to reach base on a hit. The sophomore went 2-3 on the early game, doubling both times to left field in the second and fourth innings.

Sidney Pennycuff had an incredible day from the circle, offering only one hit in 5.2 innings of work. Georgetown's first hit came in the second, followed by the sophomore holding the Tigers to a blank slate through the next three innings.

Pennycuff tabbed nine strikeouts in her fourth start of the season, besting her previous season best of five repeated against Pikeville earlier this week. The veteran lefty did not earn a run through her six-inning loss, boosting her ERA to 2.58.

GAME TWO: LOSS, 4-1
Meryn Livingston sent her third pitch over the left-center wall in the second inning, scoring the only run for the Patriots on the day. The run score tied up the ball game at one apiece, answering the errant Tiger run of the first, but the Patriots could not hold on as the fell 4-1.

UC improved at the plate between games, making more contact with the ball. Sarah Biggerstaff and Tori Malone both went 2-3 in the box during the latter game. Acacia Gray and Emily Jasper also came up with a base hit recorded.

Following the second-inning homer, Gray and Malone batted their way on base but were unable to be brought around. Later in the fifth, the Patriots left two on base again after Biggerstaff singled and Jasper walked, ended by a flyout.

The Tigers cut short Jessica Webb's six-game win-streak as the sophomore relinquished all four runs off six hits, three of which were earned. She dished three strikeouts in her start in the circle before Krystin Wilson entered action as a reliever. The rookie two more hits in her 2.2 innings of work but did not allow any of her eight batters faced to score.
