Patriots Men’s Tennis Sweeps Georgetown in MSC Quarterfinals

Bowling Green, KY – The 14th-ranked UC men's tennis team opened the Mid-South Conference tournament with a 5-0 win over fifth-seed Georgetown Thursday afternoon at WKU Tennis Court.  With the win the Patriots improve to 11-5 overall and advance to the semifinals, while the Tigers move to 6-15.

Teaming for the first time this season, Luis Montull and Anthony Kwok recorded an 8-0 win over Cole McCreary and Kaushik Kailish at #3 doubles to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.  At #1 doubles, the 20th-ranked doubles team of Eric Banoub and Martin Barbier notched an 8-4 win to extend the lead to 2-0.  Aatu Merenheimo and Jan Dietrich completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Hunter Nosek and Cole Wilson at #2 doubles.

Cumberlands strong play continued in singles play as Kwok, a MSC second team all-conference selection, blanked Nosek 6-0, 6-0 at #6 singles to give Cumberlands a 4-0 advantage.  Banoub, a second team all-conference selection, clinched the match moments later with a 6-0, 6-1 win over McCreary to give UC the 5-0 win.  With the match decided all other singles matches were halted.

The tandem of Banoub and Barbier extend their win streak to ten straight matches.  Kwok improves to 7-2 in singles matches on the season, while Banoub notches his eighth singles win of the season.

The Patriots will return to the court Friday, April 19, when they face top-seed Cumberland in the semifinals.  Time and location of that match is still to be determined due to inclement weather.
