Patriots Women’s Tennis Blank Bears to Opener Conference Tournament

Bowling Green, KY – The 19th-ranked and third-seed UC women's tennis team posted a 5-0 win over sixth-seed Pikeville in the quarterfinal of the Mid-South Conference tournament Thursday afternoon at Kereiakes Park.  With the win the Patriots advance to the semifinals and improve to 10-5 overall.

Cumberlands struck first as the duo of Grace Steely and Tessa Gray posted an 8-1 win at #2 doubles to give UC a 1-0 lead. Mikaela Fros and Sydney White extended the lead to 2-0 with an 8-1 win over Ashton Jones and Sahoka Nagai at #3 doubles.  At #1 doubles, Jaclyn Jewell and Tomomi Nagao, ranked 15th in the NAIA, notched an 8-5 win to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

Gray extends her win streak to seven straight matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nagai at #6 singles to give Cumberlands a 4-0 advantage.  Steely clinched the match for UC with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jones at #5 singles for the 5-0 final.  All other singles matches were halted once UC secured the victory.

Cumberlands strong doubles play has been vital to the Patriots success as the tandems of Jewell/Nagao and Fros/White both tally their tenth win of the season. Steely and Gray are right behind with a 9-5 doubles record, while they have both hit double digit wins in singles matches.

The Patriots will return to the court Friday, April 19, when they face two-seed Georgetown in the semifinals at 2 p.m. EST at the Owensboro Tennis Complex.
