Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots struck gold in game two as
Emily Jasper crossed the plate for the 1-0 victory over #14 Campbellsville. The offensive efficiency boosted
Jessica Webb in the circle, helping her to a complete-game, three-hitter, shutout win.
The Patriots split the day with the nationally-ranked Tigers after with the loss coming in the first game of the day. With six games left in the regular season, Cumberlands stands tall with a 24-18 overall record, 10-8 in Mid-South competition.
GAME TWO: WIN, 1-0
In the pitching duel through game two, both teams endured until late in the game, holding at a stalemate until the bottom of the sixth. Offensive production and heads-up base running helped Webb deliver the one-two punch to knock off the Tigers.
Webb, entering the circle for the 17th time this season, looked to bounce back from her season-low week. The sophomore spun herself a gem, recording five hitless innings against the nationally-ranked Tigers before one charged against her in the sixth and two in the seventh.
The sophomore challenged her opposing batters, only allowing three walks in the complete game. After working three strikeouts against the 24 batters faced, Webb tallied her 10th win of the season, first double-digit win count in a season since 2016.
A stand-up double by
Tori Malone started the big offensive push for the Patriots in the fifth inning, putting two in scoring position.
Sarah Biggerstaff laced a liner to left, however the Tigers robbed her of an RBI after cleanly catching the ball on the dive for the out.
Hannah Stephenson tabbed a lead-off hit an inning later, quickly followed a safe bunt by Jasper to catch the Tigers off guard. With runners on first and second,
Meryn Livingston batted into a fielder's choice, allowing Jasper to advance to third on the batted ball.
The dugout erupted in cheers as Jasper down home for the solo score on stellar base running. The Tigers did not catch up to her speed until it was too late after unsuccessfully attempting the double play.
Jasper was also the first of the Patriots to put a hit on the score line, singling to left before being stranded on the corner. The rookie went 2-3 on the day with a stolen base and run scored to her name. The Patriots were kept hitless from then on until Malone's double in the fifth.
Coach Bailey Dillender recorded her first win over her alma mater and former coach with Thursday night's win. The victory also notched the Patriots first win over the Tigers since the 2016 MSC Tournament and first regular-season win since April 2014.
GAME ONE: LOSS, 5-1
The Patriots scored their only run of the game via a passed ball in the fifth.
Hannah Stephenson charged down her third run scored this week as the dropped third strike got behind the catcher. Two walks and a single initially loaded the bases, and the stolen base go-around kept the diamond alive until a fly-out ended the inning.
The Patriots swung heavy in the fourth, sitting three-straight singles to shallow outfield in their first attempt to string runs together. Livingston,
Madison Huber and
Acacia Gray hit the spread, sending their contacts to each of the three outfielders. The Patriots came up empty, ending the inning on a comeback to the pitcher.
The Patriots made another charge in their seventh-inning chance, putting three on once again. Jasper led off the inning with an infield single, once again using her speed to beat out the cross-field throw. Livingston tabbed her second hit – the only home player to tab multiple hits in the early game – this time out of the defensive reach up the middle. Huber took in her pitch for a free base and a bruise to load the bases.
Tough break for the Patriots however, taking the loss on a fielder's choice force-out at third. Cumberlands left 12 on base through the game after loading the bases in three of the four-final innings.
Sidney Pennycuff opened the game in the circle but did not last long, later relieved by teammate
Krystin Wilson after a walk. Through the first, the sophomore struck out one while allowing three to walk and three to score.
In her time on the rubber in relief, Wilson dropped two batters on strikes while walking two. The rookie worked Campbellsville for 6.0 innings, allowing two more runs to score in the fifth and sixth as the Tigers cushioned their win.
