Bat Pats Win Streak Snapped at Twelve versus Phoenix

Williamsburg, KY – UC Baseball entered its final weekend of regular season play on Friday hosting the Phoenix of Cumberland University for a single game. Small ball was the name of the game for the Phoenix as they tallied 16 total hits, 14 of which were singles, as they were able to snap UC's 12 game winning streak, taking the game from the Patriots by a score of 9-4. The loss moves UC to 41-6 overall on the year and 10-3 heading into the final day of regular season play.

Zach Hurley would get the nod for the Patriots on the hill and deliver a solid start. Scoring was mute until the bottom of the third. A two-out double from Robbie Stroub put a runner on in scoring position. After a walk was administered to Orley Arellano, a hart-hit single through short would bring in the first run of the game, giving UC a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, the Phoenix would answer. A leadoff walk followed by a stolen base and a single would tie the game up at 1-1. Two more singles would follow to load the bases with no one out. UC would trade a run for a double play, allowing the Phoenix to take the lead 2-1 after five innings of play.

Cumberlands would take advantage of a CU miscue in the bottom of the sixth. With two down, Jose Rojas would double to right center, putting a runner on in scoring position. Sam Seahorn would come in to run for Rojas with Bryan Benz coming to the plate. A wild pitch on ball four would send Benz to first while Seahorn would advance 90 feet to put runners on the corners. A hard hit ball to short by Santos would be booted of the glove of Jose Vera, allowing Seahorn to score to tie the game up at 2-2 through six.

Hurley's day would be done in the seventh as he was replaced by Moise Carrasco, who would work a quiet seventh inning before working himself into a major jam in the eighth. A pair of singles followed by an E1 to Carrasco and a hit-by-pitch allowed a run to score, giving the Phoenix a 3-2 lead with the bases loaded and still no one down. Hampton Clark would come in to attempt to clean up the mess. A high chopper over the pitcher's mound would squander through two Patriots to allow one more run to score before Clark shut down the rest of the side, allowing minimal damage but seeing UC trail 4-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

There, starting pitcher Polo Portela for the Phoenix was sent back out to the bump. On pitch 126 of the night for Portela, Bryan Leef would send a 2-2 pitch deep over the left field fence for his 16th home run of the season, a solo shot, cutting the lead to 4-3 heading to the ninth. There, the Phoenix would get to the Patriots' bullpen, plating five runs on five hits and three walks to take a 9-3 lead. A solo home run from Robbie Stroub, his ninth home run of the season, would sail over the left field wall to make it 9-4, but that's all the Patriots offense could muster as the winning streak was snapped.

The loss would go to Carrasco, now 2-1 on the year) going just one inning allowing two runs on two hits. Zach Hurley would get a no-decision after going six innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits and three walks while fanning seven.

The Patriots return to action on Saturday, April 27th at Doyle Buhl Stadium for Senior Day as they host the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College for a Mid-South Conference doubleheader. First game is set to begin at 1 pm with Senior Day festivities to be held between contests.
