Williamsburg, KY – A beautiful day at Doyle Buhl Stadium was the background of a mid-week matchup between the Eagles of Midway and the seventh-ranked University of the Cumberlands Patriots. After going ahead early, the Patriots would never look back as they would utilize the run rule in this one, ousting Midway by a score of 12-2 in eight innings. The win improves UC's overall record to 31-5 on the year.
Although allowing three hits in the first inning, starter
Adrian Comas would settle in and get out of the inning unmarked. In the bottom of the frame, Cumberlands would get things started and quickly. After back-to-back walks to
Pedro Nazario and
Orley Arellano and a stolen base from Nazario,
Raudy Martinez would go long on a 2-2 pitch for a three-run home run, his 11
th of the season, giving UC a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning with the bases loaded,
Kevin Rolon would bring in a run on a RBI hit-by-pitch, improving the lead to 4-0.
Midway found their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the third with one down and one on. A 3-1 pitch to Graeham Luttor would sail over the left field fence for a two-run home run, cutting the lead in half to 4-2 Patriots. Cumberlands would get one run back in the bottom of the frame, this time on an RBI walk to Rolon to push the lead back out to three at 5-2.
In the fifth, the Patriots added another run on an RBI double fom Nazario, extending the lead to 6-2. Another four-run inning would come in the sixth for UC. After an RBI single from
Bryan Benz,
J.C. Santos would blast a three-run home run, his fifth long ball of the season, to push the Patriot lead out to 10-2.
An RBI walk to Nazario along with an RBI single from
Britton Elmore in the eighth would finish out the contest, giving UC the ten-run lead and the run rule victory over the Eagles.
The win would go
Moise Carrasco who threw three innings of scoreless baseball allowing just two hits. Starter Comas went four innings allowing two earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks while fanning four.
Hector Abreu also threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
