Jefferson City, TN – The 18
th-ranked UC men's tennis team swept all three doubles and won four of the first five single matches to notch an 5-2 win over NCAA DII Carson-Newman Wednesday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 9-4 on the season and extends their win streak to five straight matches, marking the longest win streak since 2014.
Luis Montull and
Aatu Merenheimo struck first with a 6-2 win over Rintaro Oka and Victor Ireno at #2 doubles. The tandem of
Martin Barbier and
Eric Banoub extended their win streak to seven straight matches with a 6-2 win at #1 doubles to clinch the doubles point and give UC a 1-0 lead. The Patriots completed the doubles sweep though as the duo of
Jan Dietrich and
Anthony Kwok posted a 6-3 win at #3 doubles.
Cumberlands strong play continued into singles marches as Banoub defeated Marc Bantel 6-1, 7-6 (7-0), to extend the lead to 2-0. The Eagles (3-14) cut the lead to 2-1 before Kwok and Montull each tallied a straight set wins to clinch the match for UC. Barbier added an insurance point as he defeated Hernan Toledo 6-4, 6-2 at #1 singles to give Cumberlands a 5-1 advantage. Carson-Newman added a point at #5 singles for the 5-2 final.
Barbier and Montull extend their singles win streak to seven straight matches, while Kwok has won five straight. Cumberlands also improves to 3-0 against NCAA DII opponents this season.
The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, April 6, when they travel to Portsmouth, OH to face Shawnee State in a Mid-South Conference match. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
