Men’s Lacrosse Post 10-8 win over Columbia in Regular Season Finale

St. Louis, MO – Facing their 11th opponent that is mentioned in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, the fifth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team netted three goals in both the second and fourth quarters to defeat (RV) Columbia 10-8 Saturday afternoon. With the win the Patriots finish their regular season 11-3, while the Cougars move to 7-2.

Kody Swann won the opening faceoff for UC and on ensuing possession Henry Quaye found Justin Darley for the goal to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.  Cumberlands added another goal two minutes later as Dylan Crouch connected on an unassisted goal.  Columbia evened the score at 2-2 before Elerick put a well-placed shot into the cage to give UC a 3-2 edge midway through the first quarter.  After Dalton Smith extended the lead to 4-2, the Cougars netted back-to-back goals in the final minute to even the score at 4-4.

Cumberlands regained the lead in the second quarter as Elerick netted his second goal before dishing out an assists to Anthony Gray to give the Patriots a 6-4 lead with 3:28 remaining.  Less than a minute later Walker Lacey scooped a ground ball and on the transition Sam Collinson fired a shot into the cage to give UC a 7-4 advantage at the break.

Columbia tallied a pair of goals in the third quarter to cut the lead to 7-6, however the Patriots notched three unanswered goals to begin the fourth quarter. Justin Darley and Quaye scored 39 seconds apart to extend UC's lead to 9-6.  Two minutes later, Nick DiFranco forced a Cougars turnover and on the ensuing possession Crouch connected with Jake Mitchell for a goal to give the Patriots a 10-6 lead. Columbia added a pair of goals for the 10-8 final.

Elerick led the way for Cumberlands with two goals and two assists, while Quaye notched three points.  Swann went 14-19 on faceoffs with eight groundballs, while DiDranco and Mitchell combined for 15 ground balls and five caused turnovers.  Will Settle made nine saves in the win.

The Patriots return to the field Friday, April 26, when they travel to Waleska, GA for the AAC Tournament.  Cumberlands will be the top-seed and face the fourth-seed in the semifinals.
