UC Falls to Warriors for First Loss in Williamsburg Bracket

Williamsburg, KY – UC Baseball entered day two of the Williamsburg Bracket with an opportunity to earn their spot in the championship game. The only thing standing in their way was second-seed Indiana Tech. The Warriors would spoil the Patriots' plans as UC would fall to Indiana Tech by a final score of 10-5. The loss moves the Patriots to 45-9 overall and now into the elimination portion of the bracket.

After a scoreless first inning, the Warriors' Javier Castaneda hit a solo shot to left field to give Indiana Tech a 1-0 lead in the second inning. They would extend their lead in the third as Reese Olden would single and steal second. A double from Glen McClain would follow, but the runner would be unable to score. A wild pitch from UC starter Josh Avila would allow Olden to score before Brandon Burch, the courtesy runner for McClain, would come in to score via a sacrifice fly from Jake DeFries to make it 3-0 Warriors.

A pair of scoreless innings would follow before the Warriors added to their lead in the sixth. Branson Dossen would poke one over the left field fence for a solo home run while a pair of doubles from DeFries and Javier Castaneda would bring the score to 5-0 after five and a half.

The Patriots would not go away quietly though. After Kevin Rolon drew a leadoff walk and Orley Arellano reached base on an error, Raudy Martinez smashed a two-run double to the gap in right-center to cut the deficit to 5-2. Bryan Leef followed with a double, bringing Martinez home to make it 5-3. An RBI single from Jose Rojas would bring Leef home as well as UC would cut the lead down to one at 5-4 after six.

Indiana Tech responded with a run in the top of seventh on an RBI single from Spenser McGhee to make it 6-4 Warriors. Indiana Tech would add to the lead in the eighth with an RBI single from Jacob Alvidrez followed by a two-run shot to left from McClain, giving IT a 9-4 edge.  A final run would score for Indiana Tech on an RBI single from Jashaun Simon to make it a 10-4 score.

Leef would cut into the lead slightly with a solo shot to left to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but that would be all the Patriots could do as they would fall by five to the Warriors.

The loss would go to Josh Avila after tossing five innings of work allowing five earned runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four. Charles Dunavan earned the win after pitching 5.1 innings scattering five hits and four runs with eight strikeouts.

UC now awaits the winner of the elimination game between the University of Mobile and Lyon College. That game will occur on Wednesday, May 15th at 1 pm.
