Georgetown, KY – The UC volleyball team overcame a nine-point deficit to win the first set and rallied to defeat Georgetown 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23) Tuesday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. With the win, the Patriots improve to 9-5 and 1-3 in conference play while the Tigers move to 8-9 overall and 2-2 against the MSC.

Georgetown came out strong in the first set taking an 8-3 lead and extending their lead to 17-8.  From there the Patriots started to rally as an Ashley Sobocinski kill sparked a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 17-15.  Anna Zuniga added three assists, while Leah Crist tallied a pair of kills and a block.  Georgetown added a point before tallied six unanswered points to take a 21-18 lead.  After the Tigers evened the score at 21-21 the two teams traded points twice to make it 23-23.  Lexi Lester connected with Mackenzie Koch and Sobocinski for back-to-back kills to close out the set 25-23 and give UC a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers took the second set 25-17 to even the match at 1-1, however, UC bounced back in the third set. Koch added a two of her team-high ten kills to give Cumberlands a 7-5 advantage in the third set.  Georgetown cut the lead to a point before UC went on a 6-1 run, highlighted by a pair of Sobocinski kills to extend their lead to 14-8. Later in the set a Shelby Lackey block extended their lead 18-10, UC's largest lead of the match.   Georgetown cut UC's lead to four, but the Patriots continued to chip away as Zuniga found Crist for a kill to close out the match 25-19 and give Cumberlands a 2-1 edge.

Cumberlands jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set in part to a pair of Lily Chapman kills.  The Tigers responded with five straight points to even the score.  The set continued to be back-and-forth with the score tied 13 times over the course of the set with the last one coming at 23-23.  On the next possession Zuniga found Lackey for a kill, before Jennifer Stein converted a service ace to close out the set 25-23 and match 3-1.

The win is the Patriots first win at Georgetown since October 11, 2016 when UC defeated the Tigers 3-2.
