Box Score Campbellsville, KY – (RV) Cumberlands women's basketball took on third-ranked Campbellsville Thursday night, falling 79-68 after a close battle that saw the Tigers pull away in the fourth quarter. The Patriots drop their second conference game of the season to move to 3-2 in the Mid-South and 15-2 overall. The Tigers improve to 19-1 on the season, 5-1 in conference play.
Vilma Covane dominated for UC, putting up 24 points while grabbing 14 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Carla Covane also managed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Silvia Veloso notched 16 points, including a six-point streak during the second quarter comeback that put the Patriots on top at the break.
In the first 2:30, Campbellsville jumped out to a 8-2 lead over the Patriots thanks in part to three steals leading to transition buckets. The Patriots forced a turnover with 7:43 left in the quarter, which led to a
Vilma Covane layup followed by a
Carla Covane basket on the next possession to tie the game at 6-6. With 4:30 left,
Carla Covane blocked a Campbellsville layup, scoring on the other end to give the Patriots a 10-8 lead, their first of the game.
Vilma Covane splashed two shots in the final 2:00 as the as the Patriots ended the first period with a 17-13 lead.
Vilma Covane powered through contact with 8:30 to go, making the Patriots first layup of the second quarter, extending the Patriots lead to 19-15. Campbellsville continued to battle, forcing three turnovers in under a minute before splashing two straight buckets to take a 24-21 lead with 6:23 to go. The Tigers stretched a 15-2 run over the next four minutes, holding a 34-23 lead with 2:20 left in the period.
Silvia Veloso splashed two straight jumpers in the next 30 seconds followed by a pair of free throws with a 1:19 to go to bring the Patriots within four. A
Vilma Covane layup followed by a Veloso three pointer in the final minute completed the UC comeback, giving the Patriots a 36-35 lead heading into the break.
The Patriots fired for two straight buckets in the opening minute, answered by a three and a field goal from the Tigers that made it 40-40 at the 8:00 mark. Campbellsville made a layup with 7:39 to go which would be the last field goal for either team for four minutes. The Tigers took advantage of opportunities at the free throw line during the draught, going 6-6 to lead 46-42 with 3:30 to go. At the 3:20 mark, Veloso took over once again, converting on a layup in the paint before draining a pair of free throws on the next possession to tie the game at 46. Campbellsville would go on a 8-0 run to take a 56-48 lead at the end of the third.
Campbellsville scored on three straight attempts to start the fourth quarter, getting out to a 61-50 lead in the first minute. The Patriots answered with a 8-1 run by way of buckets from
Vilma Covane and
Reagan Begole to make it a four point game with 7:41 to go.
Vilma Covane scored two straight buckets, ending a 4-0 Campbellsville run around the 5:00 minute to make it a 69-65 Tigers lead. With 3:00 to go,
Vilma Covane picked up her fifth foul, sending her to the bench as the Patriots trailed 73-65. Both teams traded free throws in the final two minutes but the Patriots couldn't mount the comeback as Campbellsville would go on to win 79-68.
The Patriots shot 49% on 27-55 from the field while only converting on one three pointer to go 1-13 from deep. UC out-rebounded the Tigers 45-34.
