Williamsburg, KY – The (RV) UC women's basketball team had ten players record at least two points and one rebounds as the Patriots defeated Carver 74-40 Thursday night at Randy Vernon Court. With the win the Patriots improve to 17-5 on the season.
Abbi Douglas led the way for Cumberlands with 12 points and four rebounds, while
Carla Covane added 11 points and four rebounds.
Silvia Veloso and
Megan Morton dished out four assists apiece in the win.
Right off the opening tip
Reagan Begole grabbed the ball, pushed up court for a layup to give UC a 2-0 lead. Carver responded with a 7-2 run, before a pair of
Carla Covane buckets put the Patriots in front 8-7 with 7:19 remaining. Cumberlands defense continued their strong play, limited Carver without a field goal for the final 8 minutes of the first half. Offensively,
Abbi Douglas converted eight straight points, including a pair of three's, while
Addison Wilson hit from long range to give the Patriots a 19-9 lead after the first period.
Begole got things started in the second quarter with a steal and three-point play to spark an 8-0 Cumberlands run giving UC a 27-9 lead. Both teams struggled to score as Carver outscored the Patriots 7-4 over the next six minutes. The Patriots offense came alive as
Jasmine Flowers connected with
Jasmyne Stewart and
Abbey Estes for consecutive buckets to push the lead to 36-16 at the break.
Imari Hightower hit a three-pointer for Carver to open the third quarter, however, the Patriots responded with 10 unanswered points to take a 45-19 lead midway through the quarter. From that point the Cougars scored five straight, before Covane converted a three-point play to push the lead to 50-24 with 3:45 left. Carver outscored UC 8-7 to end the third quarter cutting the lead to 57-32.
Flowers and Estes began the final period by each hitting from beyond-the-arc to extend Cumberlands lead to 63-34 with 5:58 remaining. Stewart netted five straight Patriots points, over the next two minutes, to push the lead to 68-37. Cumberlands closed out the game on a 6-3 run for the 74-40 final.
The Patriots will return to action Thursday, February 6, when they travel to Marietta, GA to face Life in a MSC showdown. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. with live video available
